Remembering Keith Again
Jack made most of his living in supporting roles for television but he still loved the stage. Acting had always been his way of life and his fondest memories were those when he had traveled with his father to watch him perform on Broadway. At thirtythree, Jack had hoped to be more successful than he was. He had learned a great deal from his father and graduated from San Francisco State with a degree in drama and music. He had learned over the years that acting was more than skill and depended a great deal on luck, being in the right place at the right time and knowing the right people.
His family life while growing up had been rocky, his parents fought constantly often leaving Jack feeling responsible. At the age of five, Jack had tried to hang himself but his father had discovered him and saved his life. Unfortunately, the unhappy childhood continued and as Jack grew older he often acted out. His parents eventually divorced but that didn’t save Jack from being placed in boarding schools during his prepubescent years. As a teenager he had experimented with drugs and the fondness he developed for the numbing effect he got from them, continued as he aged.
Over the years, he had become defiant. Jack was often angry with the way the world worked, especially hollywood. He made a decent living with his craft, but he thought that he was better than the roles he was being offered and he wanted more. He argued with his agent about everything and had a disagreeable reputation that was slowly growing with each passing year. When his agent called and commanded that he come pick up a letter, Jack was curious yet angry. He didn’t like being ordered to do anything, yet his agent had made it clear to Jack that he must come pick it up.
Most correspondence came by way of his agent but he could pick those letters up at his leisure. The letters were usually nonsense, ideas for scripts, fan mail, requests for autographs or just bizarre letters. Admittedly, most of these remained unanswered and were filed in his trash can. Jack really had little interest in pleasing anyone other than himself but something about this letter was different. After arriving at his agent’s office he was handed a manilla envelope and was told there was a letter inside of it. His agent had told him that the letter wasn’t to him, but rather to his unknown younger half brother, Keith.
